JumpCity - a City Builder Platformer
Young mayor, it is up to you to build this new town. Plan your buildings smartly so that they all meet their requirements.
But to build, you need construction materials. The delivery crates are scattered all around the land, you wil have to find them and gather them. unluckily, you lost a bet to your brother and now the floor is lava.
Game & Controls
Since the game lacks a real tutorial, I will attempt to explain it better here.
There is no win condition, your objective is simply to expand your city and make it as nice and populated as you can.
The game is made of two modes: building and platforming. Press X to switch mode at any time. Platforming allows you to gather construction resources, while building allows you to create new platforming paths.
Platforming
The floor is lava: you can only stand on the buildings of your city and the cliffs around. Otherwise, you will respawn at the town hall.
The jumping has input forgiveness (jumping right after you left the ground or right before you touch it is allowed) and nuancing (pressing jump longer makes higher jumps).
Keyboard controls: move with WASD, jump with space, rotate camera with QE.
XBox gamepad controls: move with left stick, jump with A, rotate carma with right stick.
Building
Construct and arrange buildings so that they all work out. Each building has a building cost, resource productions and resource consumptions. The game simulates productions and consumptions permanently, whereas the cost is used at construction time only.
A building attemps to collect its consumed resources at the surrouding buildings: you can see the collection range as the green circle when building. Each building that produces a resource will stock it internally, waiting to be consumed by others.
If a buliding cannot fint its needed resources around, it becomes depraved (greyed out). That means it will no longer produce nor be usable when platforming until you provide it with the resources!
The resources are food, energy and pop. Farm produce food, mills produce energy and houses produce pops. The town hall provides a bunch of each as a starting help!
Game Jam information
This game is a submission for the MixAndGameJam 2020. I worked on it alone, except for the music that was made by a friend.
Almost all assets were in the 48 hours of the jam:
- the 3D models and graphics
- the music (thanks Malkins0n <3)
- the code
The only elements that were reused are:
- the few SFX, retrieve on freesound.org (CC0 license)
- the mayor's animations are from Mixamo
- a personal finite state machine system for the character controller (https://github.com/Helluys/FsmCore - i suggest you do not use it, it is crap)
Limitations
Due to the short time allowed, I could not go as far is I wished. Here are some things I know should be improved:
- Add a menu allowing to restart/quit/configure the game
- Provide a true tutorial or way to understand the game (instead of this hastily added and ugly text panel)
- Display current status of buildings, and give the player a way to know why a building is depraved
- Allow to remap the controls (damn it InputSystem, Y U no work)
- I wished ot have a WebGL build, but unfortunately it is bugger under Unity 2020.2 (there is no sound) :(
There are probably plenty other things that need improvement. But hey, that was 48 hours.
